MURALS

Mural Unveiling

On November 23, 2006 Emery Village unveiled its very first mural, "Emery Village: History in the Making," depicting the Huron aboriginal settlement, the pioneers, and an interpretation of the present and future of the heart of Emery Village at the southwest corner of Weston Road and Finch Avenue West. The artists are Filip Matovina and Daniel Paterson of the Etobicoke School of the Arts.

It was here, on the corner of Weston Road and Finch Avenue West where Emery's first Pioneers, Isaac Devins and his wife Mary Chapman, arrived from Pennsylvania in 1795, following the American Revolution. Devins' original farm was situated here, south of Finch Avenue West, extending from Weston Road to Islington Avenue. The Devins family served the community with a Blacksmith Shop built in 1870 and a Wagon Shop built in 1873, and continued to own and operate the land until 1963.

Present on the day of our mural unveiling were Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti and members of the Emery Village BIA Board of Management. Our Board Members include: Lorraine Chabot-Vecera, Ashley Herman, Frank Garcea, Anna Maria Pantaleo, Chris Kourtesiotis, Grace Denton, Harbhajan Dhillon, Gary Tibbo, and Steve Sanderson. This project would not be possible without the dedication and historical expertise of Tim Lambrinos, Board Member and Chair of the Emery Village BIA Arts and Heritage Committee. Also present were BIA Coordinator Sandra Farina, artists Filip Matovina and Daniel Paterson, property owner Dr. Patrick Safieh, Catholic School Trustee Sal Piccininni and community members at large.

We wish to thank Dr. Patrick Safieh for allowing us to utilize his building to display this mural.

We wish to also thank the artists, Filip Matovina and Daniel Paterson for dedicating their time and talent.

This mural was also possible through the Mural Program offered by the City of Toronto's Economic Development Office.
